The American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes have replaced their 2021 consensus report on managing type 1 diabetes in adults. It appeared in Diabetes Care on 15 September 2026.
Every section has been revised. The emphasis has shifted towards integrating diabetes technology, and the report now covers therapies that delay the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes. Its scope widens to screening for long-term complications and to managing obesity and cardiovascular risk in adults with type 1 diabetes. Psychosocial care and structured self-management education remain core elements.
The abstract does not give the individual recommendations, so read the full report before changing protocols. For most adult clinics the likely practical work is in three places: technology pathways, weight and cardiovascular risk in a population that increasingly has both, and routine psychosocial screening.
- Compare your clinic's technology offer (CGM, pumps, automated insulin delivery) with the updated report
- Record weight and cardiovascular risk factors in adults with type 1 diabetes as actively as in type 2
- Check that complication screening intervals match the revised guidance
- Build psychosocial screening and self-management education into routine reviews
Why it matters
Adult type 1 diabetes care is now expected to cover obesity, cardiovascular risk and disease-delaying therapy, not glucose alone.
