Adult type 1 diabetes: the 2026 ADA/EASD consensus

Review how your adult type 1 service handles device choice, complication screening, cardiovascular risk and weight against the updated consensus, not glucose alone.

The American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes have updated their 2021 consensus on managing type 1 diabetes in adults. The new report revises every section to take in recent evidence and newer therapies.

Two shifts stand out. Automated insulin delivery and continuous glucose monitoring are treated as standard parts of care, and there is new guidance on interventions aimed at delaying progression to stage 3 clinical type 1 diabetes. The scope also widens to screening for long-term complications and to managing obesity and cardiovascular risk, which have become harder to ignore as people with type 1 diabetes live longer.

Self-management education and psychosocial support are held up as central rather than optional. The document is guidance that synthesises evidence; it does not report a single new trial, so treat it as a framework for reviewing how your adult type 1 service is set up.

  • The report updates the 2021 ADA/EASD guidance for adults with type 1 diabetes.
  • Automated insulin delivery and continuous glucose monitoring are framed as standard components of care.
  • New sections cover therapies aimed at delaying progression to stage 3 clinical type 1 diabetes.
  • Screening for complications and managing obesity and cardiovascular risk are now explicit parts of type 1 care.
  • Diabetes self-management education and psychosocial support remain central.

Why it matters

Adult type 1 care now has to account for obesity, cardiovascular risk and disease-delaying therapy, not just glucose and technology.
