ADA/EASD revise the adult type 1 diabetes consensus

Review your adult type 1 pathway against the updated report, especially complication screening, weight and cardiovascular risk.

The 2026 consensus report from the American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes replaces the 2021 version. It revises every section and puts the integration of diabetes technology at the centre of care.

The scope is wider than before. It now covers interventions to delay the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes, screening for long-term complications, and the management of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors. Psychosocial care and self-management education and support remain core elements.

The abstract is brief and the full recommendations are in the report itself, so specific thresholds and targets should be taken from the document, not from this summary. For an Indian clinic, the practical question is which of the technology-dependent recommendations can be delivered with the sensors, pumps and education staff actually available.

  • Read the full report before changing local protocols; this summary does not carry its specific targets.
  • Check whether your clinic screens for complications and cardiovascular risk factors in adults with type 1 diabetes at the intervals the report sets out.
  • Ask about weight and cardiovascular risk at each visit, since the report now treats both as part of type 1 care.
  • Keep psychosocial review and self-management education in the routine, not as an add-on.
  • Where sensors or pumps are not affordable, document what is feasible rather than leaving the technology sections unaddressed.

Why it matters

Type 1 care is now framed as technology plus cardiometabolic risk management, not glycaemic control alone.

Don't overread it

This is a consensus statement; it does not itself prove any single intervention works.

The statistics, in plain English

A consensus report is expert synthesis, not a trial. It reflects the evidence available to the writing group and their judgement where evidence is thin, so recommendations differ in strength.
