Nutrition education in pregnancy was linked to about one point less gestational diabetes

Twenty-nine trials show a modest effect that varied between programmes, largest when delivery was structured and faithful. Plus AI-sharpened handheld carotid ultrasound, what group visits give people with chronic pain, and the follow-up after gestational diabetes that often lapses.

The edition in brief

A meta-analysis of 29 randomised trials with 17,937 pregnant women found that prenatal nutrition education was associated with lower gestational diabetes risk (RR 0.88, 95% CI 0.79–0.98): 16.0% against 17.1%. Heterogeneity was moderate, and programmes grounded in nutritional theory, delivered with high fidelity, did best. An Annals of Family Medicine study of AI-enhanced handheld ultrasound in community screening found it detected 94.8% of carotid plaques against 87.6% with standard handheld images and improved stenosis grading agreement; this is a diagnostic-accuracy study, and screening asymptomatic adults for carotid disease is not recommended by major guidelines. A qualitative study within a randomised trial of group medical visits for chronic pain in mostly low-income US patients described emotional, appraisal, informational and practical support arising from both the structure and the peers. The pearl covers postpartum glucose testing after gestational diabetes and why recall systems matter in primary care.
