Residual or recurrent adenoma after resection of a large polyp is common, especially after piecemeal or cold resection. Finding the scar at surveillance is the step that fails most often, particularly in the right colon or when a different endoscopist does the follow-up.
- Tattoo distal to any large polyp resected outside the rectum and caecum
- Photograph the defect margins after resection
- Record size, morphology, technique and whether resection was en bloc or piecemeal
- Schedule the first surveillance for about six months after piecemeal resection of a large polyp
Why it matters
Recurrence is only caught if the site can be found again.
