Ask about hearing and vision whenever mood or cognition is in question

Check and correct hearing and vision before diagnosing cognitive or mood problems in older adults.

In an older person with low mood, withdrawal or memory complaints, check hearing and vision first. Sensory loss can mimic or worsen cognitive and mood problems, and can reduce social contact.

Correct what can be corrected, such as wax, glasses or hearing aids, before labelling a cognitive or depressive disorder, and reassess afterwards.

  • Test hearing and vision at the same visit as a mood or memory screen.
  • Check for ear wax and update glasses before further work-up.
  • Offer hearing aids and fit support early.
  • Reassess mood and cognition after sensory correction.

Why it matters

Treatable sensory loss is easy to miss and commonly sits behind apparent cognitive or mood decline.
