The FDA approved a supplement to NDA 208658 on 11 August 2026 - Boehringer Ingelheim's SYNJARDY XR, the fixed-dose combination of empagliflozin with extended-release metformin. A supplemental approval modifies an application that is already licensed; it may cover manufacturing, labelling, presentation or an added population, and the approval listing names the sponsor and the product without saying which.
So this is not a new approval, not a new indication, and not evidence of anything about the drug's kidney effects. Those come from the outcome trials, which are unchanged by an administrative action of this kind. Anyone whose prescribing might turn on it should read the current US prescribing information rather than infer a change from the listing.
The one thing worth flagging for a nephrology readership is the metformin half of the combination. Fixed-dose products constrain dose adjustment, and metformin dosing has to follow eGFR - which means a combination tablet is often the wrong formulation for exactly the patients a nephrologist sees. That is a standing caution about the product class, not a comment on this approval.
