Pseudoexfoliation, raised pressure and family history predicted new glaucoma over 12 years

The Thessaloniki Eye Study re-examined 826 older adults 12 years after baseline and found that pseudoexfoliation, higher intraocular pressure, a larger cup-to-disc ratio, a family history of glaucoma and a history of heart attack were independently associated with new open-angle glaucoma; untreated blood pressure at or below 140/90 was also linked to higher risk than higher pressure. Longer sleep and alcohol use appeared protective, findings that are probably confounded and should not change advice. In a US case series of 77 eyes treated with intravitreal pegcetacoplan roughly every 1.3 months for two years, geographic atrophy growth slowed by about 41% compared with each eye's own pre-treatment rate, but mean visual acuity still fell by 8 letters. A survey of 82 residents of two blind schools in Jammu found 67% of blindness was congenital and 35% avoidable, with retinal dystrophies and corneal scarring prominent. A German series of 12 patients with periorbital necrotising fasciitis linked older age and higher LRINEC scores to prolonged intensive care, and tissue-sparing debridement did not appear worse than radical debridement.
