Parents of excessively crying babies: education helped their stress, probiotics their quality of life

Support parents of crying babies with clear explanation and a coping plan; education reduced parental stress in this review.

This systematic review looked at interventions to support parents of babies under one year who cry excessively, a pattern parents report in about 10–20% of infants. It searched eight databases to April 2025 and pooled studies where outcomes allowed.

Educational interventions reduced parental stress or anxiety in meta-analysis. Giving probiotics to the infant improved parents' quality of life but not parental depression. Few studies could be pooled, risk of bias ranged from unclear to high, and there were no safety data and little economic evidence.

The practical message is that what helps parents is mostly explanation: what normal crying looks like, how it peaks and settles, and how to cope. That is something every clinician can deliver in a consultation. The probiotic finding is on a parent outcome, not on the baby's crying, and is too weak to drive prescribing.

  • Explain the normal crying curve and that it usually settles by three to four months.
  • Ask parents directly how they are coping, and screen mothers for depression.
  • Give a written plan for what to do when crying feels overwhelming.
  • Do not prescribe probiotics on this evidence alone.

Why it matters

Excessive crying harms parents as well as babies, and the parent is the one who needs the intervention.

Don't overread it

Few pooled studies at unclear to high risk of bias; effect sizes were not robust.
