Asking a young person whether they use cannabis invites a yes or no that hides the exposure that matters. The association with psychosis is strongest for frequent, particularly daily, use and for high-potency products. Ask how many days in a typical week, what form, and since what age, and record it. The same detail helps when reviewing a first episode and when advising a relative.
- Ask how many days a week cannabis is used, not just whether.
- Ask about the form used and the age of first regular use.
- Record frequency in the notes so change can be tracked.
- Revisit use at follow-up after a first psychotic episode.
Why it matters
Daily use is where the risk concentrates, and a yes or no answer cannot tell you whether the patient is there.
