FDA approved a supplement to a generic risperidone application

No change to practice: this is an administrative supplement to an existing generic risperidone approval.

On 14 October FDA approved a supplement to ANDA 078452, an existing abbreviated new drug application for generic risperidone held by Aurobindo Pharma, an Indian manufacturer. The public record does not say what the supplement covers; supplements to generic applications are usually manufacturing, labelling or packaging changes.

There is no new indication, formulation or safety communication in this action. For prescribers it changes nothing about how risperidone is used.

  • This is a supplement to an existing generic approval, not a new product.
  • No safety warning or label change for risperidone as a class accompanies it.
  • Prescribing and monitoring for risperidone are unchanged.
  • Indian-made generics supply much of the US market; this reflects that, not a clinical change.

Why it matters

It is worth knowing which regulatory notices carry clinical weight and which do not — this one does not.

Don't overread it

A supplement to a generic application is administrative and is not a safety or efficacy finding.
