Patients often omit cannabis when asked about 'drugs' but answer a specific, non-judgemental question. Ask whether they use cannabis or bhang, how often, by what route, and when they last used it. Explain that the question is about giving the right anaesthetic, not about reporting. Recent smoking raises airway reactivity, heavy use may modestly increase anaesthetic requirement, and stopping abruptly after heavy daily use can cause withdrawal symptoms after surgery. Record the answer so that the team in recovery and on the ward knows.
- Ask specifically about cannabis or bhang, frequency, route and last use
- Explain that the question is for safe anaesthesia, not reporting
- Note recent smoking as a risk for airway reactivity
- Record use so recovery and ward teams can watch for withdrawal
Why it matters
