FDA records a supplement to a premixed daptomycin product

No change to daptomycin prescribing until the updated label shows what this supplement altered.

The FDA's Drugs@FDA database lists a supplement, dated 24 September, to the new drug application for a premixed daptomycin in 0.9% sodium chloride bag. The entry names the product and application holder but not what the supplement covers.

Supplements are often manufacturing, packaging or labelling changes; the database entry alone does not show a new indication or safety finding. For hospital pharmacies the relevance is to ready-to-use formulations — if the label has changed storage or compatibility details, the updated prescribing information will show it.

The clinical checks for daptomycin are unchanged: weekly creatine kinase, dose adjustment in renal impairment, and remembering it is inactivated by surfactant and cannot treat pneumonia. Availability of this premixed product in India is not established.

  • The 24 September entry is a supplement to a premixed daptomycin bag; the change is not specified.
  • Check creatine kinase weekly on daptomycin, more often with statins or renal impairment.
  • Daptomycin does not treat pneumonia because lung surfactant inactivates it.
  • Check the updated FDA label for any storage or compatibility change before assuming one.

Why it matters

Premixed antibiotic labels govern storage and administration on the ward, where small changes cause errors.

Don't overread it

A formulation supplement is not a new indication or a safety warning.
