The regulatory sweep found no new drug approval or recall bearing on ophthalmology today. That is the usual pattern for a largely procedural specialty, where practice is set less by drug regulators than by society standards published as guidance documents.
The current reference for cataract care is the ESCRS 2024 guideline, whose executive summary was indexed this period. Built with GRADE methodology across 32 clinical questions, its load-bearing recommendations are intracameral antibiotics to prevent endophthalmitis, topical anaesthesia as the preferred technique, toric intraocular lenses for corneal astigmatism of 1.0 dioptre or more, and NSAID drops (alone or with a steroid) to reduce inflammation and prevent cystoid macular oedema. It also supports immediate sequential bilateral surgery in appropriate patients and remote postoperative review.
Use it to standardise the perioperative pathway and to justify choices such as intracameral prophylaxis where local habit still varies.
