Triamcinolone and dexamethasone performed similarly after cataract surgery

A meta-analysis of 12 studies found no difference in pressure or inflammation, supporting choice on adherence and access; alongside, organism-specific outcomes in endogenous endophthalmitis, eplerenone in acute CSC, and a tafluprost generic supplement.

The edition in brief

A meta-analysis of 12 studies (2,003 eyes; nine randomised trials) comparing dexamethasone with triamcinolone acetonide after phacoemulsification found no significant differences in intraocular pressure, anterior chamber cells or flare up to three months; triamcinolone gave a modest, inconsistent visual advantage early on, and certainty was low. A 12-year, nine-centre cohort of 305 eyes with culture-positive endogenous endophthalmitis found Staphylococcus aureus in 37.7%, fungi in 19.3% and gram-negative organisms in 15.4%; blood cultures were positive far more often than vitreous (66.2% vs 31.1%), presenting acuity was the strongest predictor of outcome, and enucleation reached 27.7% with gram-negative infection. A double-masked trial in 44 patients with first-episode acute central serous chorioretinopathy found eplerenone speeded subretinal fluid resolution but did not improve vision over placebo. The FDA records a supplement to a generic tafluprost application. The pearl covers eye examination in candidaemia.
