Tall stature is common and usually familial. A tape measure separates most of those children from the few with an underlying condition. An arm span noticeably greater than height, with long fingers and a thin build, is worth a closer look.
- Measure arm span fingertip to fingertip with arms outstretched
- Compare with height — a ratio above about 1.05 in a child is a flag
- Plot height against mid-parental height before worrying
- Look for the wrist and thumb signs of joint hypermobility
