A parent's smartphone time, not the child's screen time, tracked slower vocabulary growth

When discussing screens and language, include the parent's phone use; it tracked vocabulary growth more than the child's screen time did.

Design
Population-based prospective cohort with latent growth modelling
Population
747 Norwegian children followed from age 5 to 7
Primary outcome
Growth in receptive vocabulary and grammar
Effect
Per extra hour of parental smartphone use: −0.42 points per year in vocabulary growth (95% CI −0.66 to −0.18)

A Norwegian population-based cohort followed 747 children from age 5 to 7, testing receptive vocabulary and grammar each year and asking about children's and parents' screen use.

Most measures of the child's own screen time were not linked to how fast language developed. But each extra hour a day of the main parent's smartphone use was associated with slower vocabulary growth (−0.42 raw-score points a year, 95% CI −0.66 to −0.18). Children who already owned a device at 4–5 scored lower at the start, but their growth was not slower.

This is observational, and the effect per hour is small. But it shifts the conversation: the family's screen habits, particularly how much the parent is absorbed in a phone during time together, may matter more than a child's screen minutes.

  • Ask about the family's screen habits, not just the child's screen time
  • Encourage parents to keep phone-free time for talking and reading with their child
  • A child's own device at 4–5 was linked to lower language scores at baseline — worth noting at developmental checks
  • Present this as an association, not proof that phones cause language delay

Why it matters

Screen advice aimed only at the child may miss the habit that matters.

Don't overread it

This is an observational cohort; it cannot show that parental phone use causes slower language development.

The statistics, in plain English

The −0.42 figure is the extra slowing in annual vocabulary gain for each additional hour of parental phone use; its interval does not cross zero, so the association is unlikely to be chance, though it is small.
