Ask about steroids in every patient with central serous chorioretinopathy

Take a full steroid history in central serous chorioretinopathy; stopping a trigger may matter more than any drug.

Corticosteroids by any route, including skin creams, inhalers, nasal sprays, injections and some traditional remedies, are among the best-recognised triggers of central serous chorioretinopathy. A drug history is cheap and sometimes the most useful single step.

  • List all steroid exposure, including over-the-counter creams and ayurvedic or herbal preparations of unknown content.
  • Discuss stopping or reducing steroids with the prescriber where possible.
  • Ask about sleep, stress and shift work.
  • Explain that recurrences are common and that new visual distortion needs early review.

Why it matters

A removable trigger is easy to miss when attention goes to scans.
