Any firecracker eye injury may hide an open globe. A rigid shield and nil pressure until the globe is examined avoids extruding contents. Irrigate chemical or powder contamination early, check the other eye, and remember the lids and face may carry burns that need separate care.
- Apply a rigid shield; never pad with pressure.
- Irrigate powder or chemical contamination promptly.
- Examine both eyes, and record visual acuity in each.
- Refer urgently if the globe may be open or vision is reduced.
